This is by far the most common question I receive when having discussions with potential company leaders about joining their organization. The short answer is that I desire to be part of something bigger than myself and our small boutique firm. The longer answer is below...
My grandfather was a critical figure in my life growing up and I looked to him for advice on a variety of topics. When it came to my career, the most impactful saying that he would always remind me of was, "Learn as much as you can about as much as you can. Make it your goal to become a mile deep and a mile wide with your knowledge of business and people, as you will be able to see holistic solutions within organizations much clearer and you will be able to relate to people across functions within an organization much easier".
I took this to heart when I chose a career in consulting. Having worked for two global organizations before building my own (I am a partner in two boutique consulting firms), where I was afforded the opportunity to work across functions on large scale global projects, I have been afforded opportunities that many have not due to being a consultant. This has helped to shape my perspective on how to build and maintain successful organizations, how to see challenges from start to finish across functions, and has helped shape me into someone who sees value in every person within an organization.
Now, I would like to be part of a larger organization again, whether that be with another consulting firm or an "industry" position. While I have enjoyed building and managing our boutique consulting firms, they simply cannot provide the same opportunities and resources that larger firms and/or company's can provide.
